Skylar Kang is a Chinese-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in London. Born in Beijing and raised between Canada and Germany, she works across sculpture, installation, textiles, electronics, and kinetic systems. Her practice explores how systems of belief, technology, and material culture shape the ways people understand uncertainty, relation, and change.

Drawing from Chinese cosmology, Daoist thought, ritual practices, and contemporary computation, Kang brings historical forms of knowledge into dialogue with mechanical movement, sensory environments, and experimental fabrication. Working with materials including silk, leather, resin, steel, incense, light, sound, and conductive technologies, she develops installations that behave less as fixed objects than as responsive systems—structures that transmit, accumulate, and transform information through time.

Before dedicating herself to art, Kang spent over a decade working in fashion archives, developing an intimate understanding of objects, material histories, and systems of preservation. That experience continues to inform her practice, not through fashion itself, but through an ongoing interest in how knowledge is encoded, circulated, and materially sustained.

A self-taught artist, Kang has developed her practice through independent research, resourcefulness, and hands-on experimentation, learning new tools and processes in response to each project. Alongside her studio practice, she founded Solarbeam Kingdom, an artist-run archive and project space, and has curated exhibitions in London and Hong Kong supporting Asian artists. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in London, Paris, Hong Kong, and the United States.
