THE TIME IS ALWAYS NOW: PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART
PHILADELPHIA, 2024
The Time is Always Now was a live choir performance by Julianknxx, presented as part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's programming in November 2024. Commissioned to evolve the costumes of the performance — to have the clothing morph alongside the work itself — Knxx invited Kang to experiment with dye and fabric manipulation, transforming the garments into something that felt less like costume and more like living material.
Working with shibori techniques on large-scale garments, Kang used a sous-vide to maintain precise temperature throughout the dyeing process — a method that speaks to her broader interest in the tension between control and transformation, the technical and the intuitive. The result was clothing that carried the marks of its own making: eroded, shifted, changed.
The piece was performed again for FRIEZE 2024, as part of it’s private view.
These commissions deepened what had begun with Finding 15 — sparking a sustained interest in textile erosion and decay as artistic practice, and in the garment as something that holds time within its fibres.
