AGAINST THE STREAM: FRIEZE X CFGNY

Against The Stream was a commission by CFGNY, an Asian-American art collective, published in Frieze Week London in October 2024. Kang was invited to collaborate on the project by photographer and director Joyce Ng, whose own work sits at the intersection of identity, image-making, and the British Asian experience — and who was drawn to Kang's practice and cultural background as a natural fit for the project.

Working across art department and fashion, Kang contributed to the recontextualisation of CFGNY's garments within Ng's lens — a body of images that mines established tropes and aesthetics while celebrating cultural identity as an elusive, in-between condition. The project brought together the collective's exploration of the 'vaguely Asian' — identity and value as endlessly constructed and reconstructed — with Ng's intimate perspective on what it means to be Asian in Britain.
